Sometimes when I take a photograph, I see things through the lens that I do not see with the naked eye. Often I will ask a client to stand in a certain place but when I look at them through the camera I see something I did not see before. Sometimes I see a tree behind them that will look odd when the image is complete or a wall that is more similar in color to their clothing that I thought it was.
Recently I met an extraordinary little girl and her parents. She has few learning delays but she is very smart. Having been an elementary teacher in another life (the 90's ha) I can just see it in her. She took direction so well, actually remarkable well for a 5 year old. This shoot was special because Chloe was taking photographs in her mother's wedding dress. The plan is for one of the portraits I took in this session to be hung with her bridal portrait when she gets married.
Back to what I was saying about seeing things through the camera that I just cannot see through the naked eye. Chloe showed up to our shoot in her pink glasses, shorts and t-shirt talking about playing on the play ground and having fun in the pool. We found places we wanted to take our photos and she slipped into the dress. When I looked at Chloe giggling and talking about her mermaid birthday party (which by the way is still 4 months away) I saw a little girl playing dress up in her mom's wedding dress. But when I got behind the lens of my camera and looked at Chloe in her mom's dress and veil, I saw a 20 something young lady ready to begin a new life, confident and accomplished. Sometimes, pictures are just pictures, other times pictures are treasures.
