Fundraiser The Elliott Family

A huge thank you to the Elliott Family for being the first to come out and raise funds to help pay off some of the medical bills for Lisa Miller and her family.  There were more this day and there are more families to come.  Keep coming back.  We love you, Lisa.

Relationship Photography I went to a photography conference at the beginning of February.  I cannot begin to tell you how much I learned about the technical and business aspects of photography.  One of the things that I did not expect to learn was about branding.  Now, I have only been in business for two years officially.  It takes photographers a while to find their style both shooting and editing.  One of the things I have found is that my favorite shots are those that show the love between people, even if not everyone is in the shot.   Or shots that convey some kind of feeling not simply a pose.  Not that there is not space for those kinds of shots as well.  I love taking photographs but I want them to be more than just photographs.  I want to tell the story of your family.

Twice As Nice This week I photographed my first newborn twins.  Photographing newborns is a lot of fun.  You never know if they are going to sleep or not and how happy they are going to be being moved around a lot. When you add a second baby into the mix . . . well, let's just say I was very unsure how the day was going to go.

Charlotte and Tatum were ROCK STARS.  I am not a photographer that does a lot of poses with little ones.  While I would not classify myself as a "lifestyle" newborn photographer I would say that I am more of a natural newborn photographer.  The girls went right alone with that. They were either both asleep or both awake and they did exactly what I asked of them. I am sure Mom and Dad are hoping that continues forever. :)

Beautiful Girl I really enjoy working with tweens.  This is first session I have had that was just a tween who was not part of a family session.  I certainly enjoyed working with this young lady.  It is just amazing to me how old and grown up she looks in some of these shots.

So Adorable!! Sometimes when I take a photograph, I see things through the lens that I do not see with the naked eye.  Often I will ask a client to stand in a certain place but when I look at them through the camera I see something I did not see before. Sometimes I see a tree behind them that will look odd when the image is complete or a wall that is more similar in color to their clothing that I thought it was.

Recently I met an extraordinary little girl and her parents.  She has few learning delays but she is very smart.  Having been an elementary teacher in another life (the 90's ha) I can just see it in her.  She took direction so well, actually remarkable well for a 5 year old.  This shoot was special because Chloe was taking photographs in her mother's wedding dress.  The plan is for one of the portraits I took in this session to be hung with her bridal portrait when she gets married.

Back to what I was saying about seeing things through the camera that I just cannot see through the naked eye. Chloe showed up to our shoot in her pink glasses, shorts and t-shirt talking about playing on the play ground and having fun in the pool. We found places we wanted to take our photos and she slipped into the dress. When I looked at Chloe giggling and talking about her mermaid birthday party (which by the way is still 4 months away) I saw a little girl playing dress up in her mom's wedding dress.  But when I got behind the lens of my camera and looked at Chloe in her mom's dress and veil, I saw a 20 something young lady ready to begin a new life, confident and accomplished.  Sometimes, pictures are just pictures, other times pictures are treasures.

Two Years The birthday of any child is a reason to celebrate.  But there is always something special about the birthday of a child who has had a special battle in their lives.  Medical advances are amazing and the odds were always very good that this little man would be survive when he was born 3 months early but the fact that he has thrived and has not only caught up by blown past the developmental goals for a child his age was not guaranteed.  I love this kid and his family.  I have loved watching him grow from a 1lbs 11oz baby to a chubby cheeked toddler that loves talk and collect anything and EVERYTHING.  I cannot wait to see what the future has to hold for this little guy.

Big Changes

I have been a very bad blogger this month.  I have no excuse.  I have taken photos of beautiful children and I just have not blogged them.  I have been remiss.

One of my favorite things about photographing children and families is seeing how they change between sessions, especially babies.  They just change so much.  They go from toothless and hairless little beings to these balls of personality and joy, well, mostly joy.  What a difference 6 and 9 months, respectively, make.

Scruggs Fundraiser

Several of you may know the Scruggs Family.  I have known them for over 10 years.  One of their twin sons, Zachary has faced some pretty serious health issues.  He has epilepsy and the doctors have been having a difficult time getting his seizures under control.  On March 10, he will undergo brain surgery to have testing done to see if he is a candidate for further surgery to hopefully, prayerfully stop his seizures completely.  This situation has been very difficult for Zachary and his parents as well as his brother Seth and sister Mollie.  Zachary's parents will both take off work to be with him in Memphis while he has the first and possibly second surgery.  Spending two weeks away from home is not cheap all the while missing work and when you add medical expenses to that the financial stress is huge.

JLA Photography will be hosting a fundraiser for the Scruggs family.  For the months of March, April and May, 40% of the proceeds from the sale of all Standard, Senior and Newborn Session fees will be given to the Scruggs family when this fundraiser is mentioned at the time of the booking.  Sessions must be not only booked but completed by May 31 to qualify.  Please consider giving this family the gift of a donation and getting family heirloom quality images for yourself.  Contact JLA Photography for complete fundraiser details.

Little Forest

This little guy made me work for it last week.  And it was so much fun.  Forest is the youngest of three and his older brother and sister were home from school and I think he was afraid that he was going to miss something.  He did not want to go to sleep and even when he did fall asleep every little thing would wake him up.  But he was so cute when he was awake and we got some great awake pictures.  Once he fell asleep good I took as many sleepy pictures as I could get in before he woke up.  One of the things I love the most of newborn photo shoots is spending time visiting with families while babies decide if they want to be photographed or not.

Dogs and Winter My personal FB friends know this but a few days ago I left one of my dogs out in the rain when I went to run some errands.  I let all the other dogs in and I forgot her.  When I got home I felt terrible.  I let her in and dried her off a little bit and then I grabbed my camera because, well, I am a photographer.  She was clearly not amused.  My poor dogs we my first subjects.  Every new camera body or lens they have been practiced on.

Yesterday, we got a touch of what the rest of the country got.  I could not get my dog to come in out of the snow.  I say that only to explain that I do not make a practice of leaving my animals out in the elements, well this animal that is.  However, in elements she is.  I enjoyed our winter wonderland if only for day, and so did my sweet pup.

The Stories of Families One of the things I found that I love about newborn photography is that you really get to talk to the family that you are working with.  Most of my other shoots an hour or an hour and a half.  Newborn shoots are longer and when the little one is deciding if they want to be photographed or not {grin}, I really enjoy talking to his or her parents.

This week I spent time with a couple of families that have some pretty amazing stories.  They are not mine to share but I will say that it is both beautiful and painful how these families have been woven together and I am so very honored to have been a small part of their little ones first days.

Six Days New I really enjoyed spending time with this little princess.

It is amazing to me at six days old there are some things that little Willa already knows.  For example, she know that she does not like head bands.  She looks beautiful in them but she does not like them.  Hats on the other hand she is fine with.  She did not enjoy being on her stomach and did not want her legs under her but loved being on her back and would turn her little head toward the camera.

Six days new seems like a pretty good age to me.

Senior Reps

This year, for the first time JLA Photography will be having a few Senior Reps.  For those of you who don't know, a Senior Rep is a rising high school senior who agrees to exclusively represent JLA Photography to their friends and classmates.  They do this by giving out rep cards that I will give them with their portrait and name and my contact information.  In return they will receive a free mini session in the spring of their 11th grade year where the portrait for the rep cards will be made and a traditional session during their senior year will be free or great discounted, depending on the number of referrals they get.  Senior reps also get cash rewards and other prizes.  I am pretty excited about this.  If you or someone you know might be interested, there is a Senior Rep menu on the web site.

Newborn Photography Until recently I have not wanted to do newborn photography.  It scared me.  The babies are so little and fragile.  But I have had several people ask me so recently I decided to take some steps into photographing newborns.  I asked around on a some of the forums I am part of and looked at examples of some of my favorite photographers.  And while I think a lot of the more posed newborn photographs are absolutely adorable they do not seem to fit my more organic style.

So I began to research natural newborn photography.  I love the idea of photographing newborns as they are.

I have begun that journey and it is was pretty fabulous.  Newborns hold so much promise, so much hope, so much joy for their parents.  This is my favorite shot from my first solo true newborn shoot.

This Year My Best Friend gave me this ornament for Christmas.  One of the things I noticed about it was the detail in the veins of the leaf.

I am not someone who makes resolutions at the beginning of the new year.  However, as a business woman, there are goals that I have for JLA Photography and the beginning of a new year seems to be a good time to sit down and look at those goals.  There are a lot of specific goals that I have but almost all of them boils down to details.  I want to pay more attention to the details both with my clients, my images, my custom sessions, my products and my service.

Happy New Year!  I hope it is as blessed for you as I know it will be for me.

Saying Good-bye Today I had the sad/wonderful task of taking a few casual family pictures of one of my favorite clients and friends.  They are about to have to say good-bye to their beloved dog.  She has an mass that can not be removed surgically so they are keeping her comfortable and loving on her.  My friend has had her dog longer than she has known her husband and much longer than she has been a mom.

As a dog lover and friend I am broken hearted for her.  My dogs were my first "subjects" when I learned photography.  They still are my favorite models when I want to try a new lens or am playing with lighting.  One of my dogs use to run when I took out my camera . . . which meant she spent most of her time running from me. {grin}

I am glad I got to capture the love of this family with their sweet pup.

The Big Fat Indian Wedding I am wide awake before the sun is up this morning because jet lag is not my friend.  I have been home from India for a little over two days and my body doesn't seem to believe me when I tell it that it actually 4:00 in the morning.

My brother got married a little over a week ago.  If you have never been to an India wedding you are missing out on a wonderful experience.  Being part of the many celebrations and ceremonies was an adventure I will not soon forget.  My sister-in-law has the biggest family on earth.  India has a population of 1.2 billion people and I believe that I met 1.1 billion of them.  I loved every minute of it.

These are a few of my favorite photos from the wedding and the events around the wedding.  The last photo was taken by The Shooting Spot in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.

Senior Session When most of your really good friends are older than you are, there are not a lot of things that make you feel old.  Also, I am not old. (wink) However, in the last few weeks, there have been a few things that have made me feel old.  In preparing to leave for India I was getting some meds at the pharmacy and this young man, with an obvious cold, came up and asked me what he should take.  After giving him my opinion he smiled, thanked me and told me that he knew I would know because I was so old!!!  I am sure when I was 17 or 18 years old 41 seemed very old too but still . . . .

And this fall I did the senior picture session for a young woman I have known since she was 3 months old.  She has grown into a ridiculously charming and beautiful young lady who is funny and confident.  I look forward to seeing what the future holds for her.

First Birthdays I have had a lot of fun shooting first birthday parties.  While it doesn't look like it, sweet little Andrew (pictured second)really did have a wonderful time at this party.  The smash cake idea was a little lost on him once it got in his eye.  Sometimes my favorite pictures are the real moments.  Alexander loved his little cake.  The twinkle in his eye is just adorable.
